چکیده

Abstract Background Atrazine has impacted negatively on fish by inducing significant alterations in their haematological, biochemical and histological parameters. Mitigating such to enhance survival becomes pertinent. Unfortunately, readily available eco-friendly remedies are scarce. The study, therefore, investigated the potential ameliorative effects of dietary supplementation aqueous Carica papaya Mangifera indica leaf extracts atrazine-induced toxicity oxidative damage tissues Clarias gariepinus . Fish (average weight: 10.57 ± 1.69 g, average length: 10. 36 1.26 cm) were randomly divided into six groups ten samples each. Group I served as control administered borehole water only, group II was exposed 8.50 µg/l atrazine corresponding ¼ 96 h LC 50 , III treated with low (0.25 mg/g) concentration each extract alone, IV extract, V high (0.75 VI extract. experiment spanned 28 days after which histopathological assayed. Results intoxication significantly induced gill liver, culminating different disorders, decreased haematological parameters, increased serum, liver levels malondialdehyde enzyme biomarkers (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate lactate dehydrogenase acetylcholinesterase). On other hand, exposure caused glucose, protein superoxide dismutase tissues. Treatment diets fortified both all reduced serum elevated a concentration-dependent manner. Biochemical parameters also improved extracts. Histopathological examination showed ameliorating restoring structural functional integrity tissue. Conclusions These results suggest that have potentials against peroxidative injury C. utilisation these could better health management practices, particularly rice-cum culture, where application is common.

Histopathological Alterations in some Body Organs of Adult Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Exposed to 4-Nonylphenol

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) include synthetic and naturally occurring chemicals that affect the balance of normal functions in animals (Razia et al. 2006). It has been found that exposure to natural and synthetic estrogenic chemicals may adversely affect wildlife and human health (Colborn et al. 1993). In vitro exposures (Soto et al. 1992; Soto et al. 1994; Toomey et al. 1999) have co...

Selected haematological changes in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) infected with a Trypansosoma sp. from the Vaal Dam, South Africa.

The use of haematological techniques to assess fish health is generally accepted. The aim of the current study was to determine selected haematological changes that occur in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822). infected with trypanosomes. Blood films were prepared according to standard techniques to confirm trypanosome infections and whole blood was collected, the serum and plasma separated, an...

Affinity purification and partial characterization of IgM-like immunoglobulins of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822).

IgM like macroglobulin from bovine serum albumin (BSA)-immunized African catfish C. gariepinus was purified by affinity chromatography and partially characterized. The molecular weight of this macroglobulin was 840 kDa, as estimated by gel filtration chromatography. Purified macroglobulin was analyzed using SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions. The molecular weight (MW) of heavy ...

Survival, growth, metabolism and behaviour of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822) early stages under different light conditions

African catfish, Clarias gariepinus were exposed to total darkness (group D) or continuous light (L) during endogenous feeding. During external feeding some of the fish continued to be reared in darkness (DD) and some in light (LL), whereas two groups were exposed to reversed light conditions (groups DL and LD). Survival to the end of yolk absorption was 22% greater in fish exposed to darkness;...

On cestode and digenean parasites of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) from the Rietvlei Dam, South Africa.

Sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, from the Rietvlei Dam near Pretoria, South Africa were examined for internal platyhelminth parasites. Two adult cestodes, Polyonchobothrium clarias (stomach) (prevalence 71%, mean intensity = 5, n = 7) and Proteocephalus glanduliger (anterior intestine) (prevalence 14%, mean intensity = 2, n = 7), were found in the gut while metacercariae of one larval di...
